Background

The Blackburn Classics has a long and illustrious pedigree. It was started by the Blackburn Music Society and was later taken under the wing of the King George's Hall General Manager.  The two main orchestras have always been the RLPO and The Halle, with Manchester Camerata making an occasional appearance and sometimes a orchestra from further afield!

Opera and ballet have had regular performances at King George’s Hall over the years. Unfortunately we have not been able to take an opera performance this year due to funding restrictions, although we would love to offer a high class performance in the future should a sponsor come forward. The Vienna Festival Ballet are producing Nutcracker  this year. The ballet is a firm favourite in particular with the younger audience and the dance schools.

 NEW Season

The Blackburn Classics Season at King George's Hall in 2011-2012 is bigger and better than ever!  We have an excellent choice of events this season, culminating with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June 2012.  The excitement of next year's Olympics is reflected in a sporting programme with Carl Davis, and before that a trio of Halle concerts showcase some greatest works in the classical repertoire.  We hope you have a wonderful season!

  Friday 23 September 2011 - The Halle   Friday 28 October 2011 - The Halle   Friday 17 February 2012 - The Halle

Friday 13 April 2012 - Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra   Friday 22 June 2012 - The Halle

The October Concert was the 90th Anniversary of The Halle's debut at King George's Hall.  Staff from the venue and Cllr Damien Talbot posed with a vintage car for The Lancashire Telegraph to celebrate the occasion.

Group & Coach Offers

We offer an excellent incentive if you can get a large group of friends together.  There are many coach companies around the area who are geared up to bringing groups to KGH, who we can put you in touch with. Don’t forget we also do a good deal on pre and post-concert suppers. Please contact the Box Office for further details.

Friends of Blackburn Classics

This is an informal group of anyone willing to offer ideas and practical help in support of the concerts. There is no personal financial commitment – just some time and perhaps a bit of travelling. Friends have:
  • Come together as a discussion group to help us develop the programme and take up
  • Taken posters around their local shops and outlets
  • Spread the word about the Blackburn Classics by sending on emails and promotional information to anyone they think might be interested
  • Put us in contact with potential sponsors
  • Volunteered on the concert nights to help the staff out

Future development of the group:

We are conscious that as King George's Hall is managed by a Council there are many grants not open to us. A more formal Friends Group may be able to secure additional funding to help expand and improve the Blackburn concerts. Please let us know your thoughts.

Please contact Anne Macksmith 01254-582579 if you are interested in helping in any way.

Feedback & Surveys

Thank you to everyone who completed our survey in January 2011. We had about 200 responses. This was really helpful in helping us decide on the new season, the programme and the very difficult decisions we had to make on the pricing.

We have also had several letters with ideas on how we can encourage a better take up and financial position. I hope you see some of your thoughts and ideas in the new season programme and organisational arrangements.

Previous Years Programme Highlights

Everyone will have their favourite concert and piece. The best attended concert last season was the final concert in April with RLPO and Vasily Pretrenko...... The Rachmaninov Piano number 2 played by Sophia... was amazing. A known favourite and in fact Classic FM’s number one in its “Hall of Fame” this year. Vasily gave an animated talk and answered many questions during our first pre-concert talk, with over 100 people, interviewed expertly by James Davy the Assistant Director Music at Blackburn Cathedral.
