Ken Dodd 15 nov 08

What can you say?!?!?  Ken Dodd appeared at King Georges on Saturday 15 November, he went on stage just after 7pm and came off about 12.15am on Sunday 16 November.  With just a 20 minute interval it surely was the best value comedy show of the festival, featuring The Diddymen and some of Ken’s numerous other friends all the audience were treated to a marathon comedy session.  Were you there?  What did you think?

Great show. Ken was on great form…fantastic to see him still going…even if the girlfriend did fall asleep at one point! Top performance from Mr. Dodd!!

was a really good night and excellent value for money but it just seemed like when everything was going fine he was given an instruction to wrap it up (because of the time) ?
The end seemed to be as much as a shock to Ken himself as to the rest of the audience !

Ken Dodd certainly gave value for money. However, I can’t say the same for the seating arrangement and accoustics at KGH. Our tickets stated ‘Centre Stalls’, but we were actually seated three rows from the back underneath the side balcony where the sound quality was awful. Though quite loud enough, we were unable to tell what was being said as the sound was ‘muffled’. Part way through the performance we moved ourselves into vacant seats in the balcony by the side of the stage where the sound quality was much better. Come on KGH, surely you can invest in better sound equipment!

I’m afraid to say that we left after an hour. Perhaps we didn’t give it chance but there wasn’t a single joke that he told that I hadn’t heard before and most of his material was dated. Having said that, most of the audience did seem to find him funny so perhaps we were just too young (30s) to appreciate his humour?

Ken Dodd is a true professional
No swareing, no repatition, and to keep on stage at the rate that he did. Truely amazing
I have NEVER excercised my chuckle bone so much.
Worth twice as much as we paid.

Have seen Ken many times before and every time I see him he seems to get better (if thats possible) he is truely amazing at his age and the show was fantasic

KD may be a professional but an over the hill and outdated one. We had really looked forward to the show but what a disappointment. I barely smiled let alone laughed. We left at 8.30 feeling very let down. The majority of people were grey haired grannies who roared laughing at weak comments regarding Burnley, Rawtenstall and Preston. The seats were very uncomfortable but the sound was ok. Sorry.

Ken Dodd has to be the craziest person I have ever met. What a true professional. The show was worth every penny. Granted some of the jokes were dated but his delivery and absolute insanity made me laugh all night long. The guy playing the banjo was amazing. This man has to be respected for his contribution to pure British humour. His ad lib was to be credited too. The guy is as quick as lightening when he gets going. The ending was a surprise but this has to be testimony to how much we were enthraled by his constant banter. 5 hours felt like 1 for me. The worst part of the evening was the blasted road system. Respect the man for what he portrays. Viva KD

Ken Dodd was truly brilliant!! The last of his kind, lets hope he can carry on a lot longer. Our party went from 14 years of age upto late 60s and everyone enjoyed it. Its the third time I’ve see him and everytime he’s been worth every penny. What a performance for his age especially. Keep it up Doddy and hope I get a chance to see you again!!!!!!

Such a wonderful night of entertainment. I sat there a row back from the front and between the many bursts of laughter I had, I was absolutely mesmerised by him.

How can this man of so many years of comedy still manage to keep it fresh, funny, and without a single recourse to vulgarity or offensiveness?

From watching him on the television, I often wondered if the audience was seeing the same show as I was but when he is live and you are there, the interplay with the audience is eclectic.

If you’ve never seen him live, I would urge you to before this absolute treasure of comedy can no longer get on stage. A man who truly is remarkable at 80 and long may he go on. God bless, Ken!

From a new 30-something fan.

What a Master for somone at is age to entertain an audience and make me laugh all night is the work of a pure genius !!!!! Great show one of the few great entertainers of our time well done KD Yes the end was cut short but i dont think he had much to do with that? But come on we certainly got value for money… try one of the so called up and coming comedians youll be home for 10 !!!!!!.

Accoustics were awful - missed a lot of the show. Left at the interval as the seating was so uncomfortable. Ken Dodd was fantastic as usual - showing his age but still able to make the grannies and grandads laugh. Come on KGH, put some investment into the comfort of the hall.

There seems to be a ‘Mixed Response’ to the Ken Dodd Show! I’ve never seen K D before & unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get to the show, but hopefully I ‘ll get to the next one where I can make my own comment!?

We had excellent seats right in the middle of the balcony on the first row of the upper rows. He is fantastic, some of the younger comedians should take a leaf out of his book, NO Swearing or fowl language of any sort he is brilliant.
I didn’t quite understand why people kept moving in and out of the room instead of waiting for the interval!!
Will defo go and see him again. Seen him many times on the TV but you don’t get the full effect until you see him live!!

True professional!!

We were hot and a bit cramped in the balcony during the first half. Yes, some of the material was a bit dated ie the pianist and the ‘war’ songs but surely the show is geared towards an older audience. After a much needed stretching of legs during the interval we moved to sit near friends in the stalls and were much more comfortable. Ken was in fine form, the ventrioloquist dummy act was hilarious and although we had heard some of the jokes before, it really is the way he tells them. He is a master!!! I have so much admiration for him, he is amazing for a man of 81…..LONG MAY HE REIGN. Thanks Ken for a wonderful evening, hope to see you again soon.

We were in the stalls under the balcony and it took about an hour to get our ears tuned in to the sound system.
However we thought Ken was absolutely brilliant.

We are from Pendle and assumed parking in the shopping centre car park was the place to be , and luckily overheard someone say that it closes at 11PM. So we nipped out and moved the car. It seems that the capark operators dont accomodate late finishing events.

I was really looking forward to the show but the experience was spoilt by the very uncomfortable seating and poor accoustics, I was in the side stalls. Ken Dodd was on form, but we were very disappointed and had to leave at the interval ,we couldn’t stand it any more.

Thoroughly enjoyed Ken Dodd’s act , and the banjo/violinist is fantastic. HOWEVER the seating is DREADFULLY uncomfortable and the light for the pianist shone directly in the eyes of the people sitting in the stalls on the left facing the stage. Many were sitting sideways to avoid it blinding them. A point to note please. P’raps the first half could have been shorter then the lady vocalist wouldn’t have had to cope with all the people trolling to the loo!!!

On jokes per minute and minutes per show no one beats Doddy!! Five hours of almost non-stop quick fire good old-fashioned humour. Fantastic. Have seen him before and would see him again - long may he continue. Also, Andy Eastwood (on the banjo) was very good.

Saw Doddy down at Eastbourne (for the first time!) in August and promised myself that I’d see him again. Thankfully I got the chance on the 15th and wow what a guy! The jokes were very very different from the ones he told at Eastbourne. I sat transfixed and smiling(inbetween the laughing!). You’ve got to give him credit for his professionalism let alone the ability to make people laugh for 5 hours. He’s one person you wouldn’t mind getting stuck in a lift with. Fingers’ crossed he does a tour next year. Lets hope he gets to see the “nice” comments we’ve all written about him. Keep on Doddy!
