Soul Night 28 June 2008

On Saturday night (28 June) we had our mid summer Soul Night with all the regular DJs and all the fun that goes with them.  Everybody seemed to have a great time (although not many seemd to enjoy themselves as much as Richard Searling and his 3D Magic Eye shirt!!!) and the night was its usual mix of all ages and music tastes.  Were you there?  What did you think?  Let us know.

Being based at Portsmouth it is a trek to come up to KGH for the Soul nights and I do not miss any, especially the Sep venue being an old Casino goer, back to last Sat… Brilliant as usual but sometimes a little too much motown in one stint for me, could be staggered!!! at one point I thought of renaming it Motown/northern soul venue..(nit picking I know… - the highlight for me was the last hour from 2 to 3 “AWSOME” SEE YOU ALL IN SEP

please we need to know when the next one is….

HI GREAT NIGHT UPSTAIRS AS USUAL BEER STILL BIT ON EXPENSIVE SIDE COULD DO WITH EXTENTION ON HOURS FOR A BIT EXTRA CASH WORTH TRAVELLING DOWN FROM CARLISLE , COULD DO WITH MESSAGE TO SAY NO DRINKING ON THE DANCEFLOOR ,SOULNITE NOT TO BE MISSED……..CRAIG

The next Soul Night is on September 27.

went to the soul nite at kgh on saturday first time ever,
i dont go out much, but boy did i have a good time.what a fantastic nite i had,my legs were still dancing on sunday, cant wait till the next one.

Me and my friends have been coming her for 3 years. We love love love it. The vibe is great. Music fantastic. Good atmosphere all round. We have met some good friends here. There could be some decent air conditioning though , as it is like a sauna, and with all the weaves and afro hair around, it is a recipe for disaster!!! Please sort this and you will score 10/10. Cant wait for September

As always the night was fantastic.Mark Grice and co playing some top class music.
Spent all night on the dance floor and can`t wait till the next one.
WHAT A NIGHT……….

For me and the girls this is the nite we always look forward to and never miss. Would love the air conditioning to work better than it does at present, cos talk about hot!!
The nite flew by with some fab tunes that I adored, didnt want it to end, cant believe we have to wait until September now.
The other thing that made my nite was all the old faces from years gone by, what a blast.
Well done King Georges you deserve a star XX

What a fab night! Ist time at the soul night! me and the girls loved it! The R&B room got abit busy tho!

Will defo be up for the next one in September! Can’t wait!

Went again to KGH on Sat and it was an improvement on the last time I went. Have given it a miss over last 12 months as up to last June had not missed one in 13 yrs. Reason for the gap was that I got very frustrated and angry at too many hand baggers coming onto the floor with drinks and spilling contents. Also no continuity between Dj’s an as much as play there choice with no regard to previous spots. On the drinks front there is a growing lack of respect ( or probably niavity) that in Northern terms the floor is sacracant so can we have some education policy on this for the younger ones please. As a person who lives to dance this must happen or it will turn off us die hards. I saw evidence of this lack of respect last sat albeit the numbers were lower so not as bas as have seen before. I also noticed that on sat a vast number of the hardcore NS fans were not there.. Is this now the norm at KGH? Aslo I have to say that the music was better in as much i was not the only one box of records which is very often used with dos like this. Come on DJ’s listen to what was played before or sort it out between you. Dont go the way of the tower was last year and have the Contours played 7 times in 7 spots.

One of the best music nights a mo but the RnB room is better suited down stairs, downstairs music would be better suited to smaller room. The nights not quite the same since we lost the RnB backroom downstairs…..

As usual I had a good time but am still (along with a number of my friends)very much aggrieved by Blakeys now being part of the soul night, the dancefloor is WAY WAY TOO SMALL!!!!!! It is almost impossible to get a dance in there sometimes, half the time I find myself precariously balanced on the steps at the front or getting shoved out the way at the bottom of them. I know the reasons behind the shutting of the small back room, which is the worst thing that has happened - we’ve lost all the vibe, plus the dancefloor space, but this is getting completely impractical…& OMG how hot was it in there…I mean I know I wasn’t wearing much (as usual!) but crikey was hotter than hot.
Am finding that am not dancin at all now ( I’ll have no comments on that from those who know me) & I used to dance my socks off when I first started going….come on guys & sort it out, there are plenty of good recommendations…why not give them a try, if it doesnt work at least u’ve tried….this is a sell out event now, I remember when it wasn’t, stop being so much about the money & start listening to the people who come soul night after soul night - the ones who are gonna stop coming if this doesnt change soon….
Ok rant over…glad to get that off my chest.
P.s would be good if we could post pictures too!!

only 2nd time i’ve been but won’t be missing any in future. great time great music. spend most of the time in blakey’s. great mix of people too. all ages, types nothing cliquey.

always enjoy soul nights after discoverin them last year.Like others it is off puttin having people drink on the dance floor, it was never like that at first so why now????
also agree it would be good to swap the r&b room to downstairs, love the music but you just cant dance or move in there!!!! Not too sure if a live band works everytime !!! Be good to know if there is a live band on before hand.
Still enjoy the night and look forward to it every time . ***

i love the soul night venue and have been going regulary for the last few years. I have to agree with others that the R’n'B room upstairs doea not work. No Vibe, No room to Dance and Too damn hot!!.

It is suited to the room downstairs that always has loads of space to dance even when playing some cool rare groove tunes.

To improve the R’n'B element it really needs a much bigger dance floor

I absolutely agree with what is being said about the R & B room. Far too small, far too hot, it’s killing the vibe!! I have been going to these nights at KGH since 1995 when they first started. Always been a great nite. BUT the R & B room I thnk, should be in King Georges hall, move the Northern soul room to the back room where we formerly had R & B and keep Jazz Funk room the same. Northerners might not be happy with that but I think they’ll still have plenty of room to dance and R & B is attracting more and more people now! C’mon guys, listen to the people and sort it out!!!

The first time I went to KGH - about 3 years ago - I was ‘buzzin fo dayz’. The vibe was brilliant - you could flit between the two rooms downstairs and still maintain the vibe as as the location was so close. Since the closure of the back room and the RnB being moved to Blakeys bar, there is definately a change.

My suggestion for an improved atmosphere is to switch the music from blakeys bar to downstairs and vice versa. The bigger dancefloor would accomodate the majority of people - Rnb crowd. It seems that the majority of responders would like a change - even if Its worth a try for a few events.

Only 3 weeks to go til the next one - but I am sure the decision makers are able to pull out the stops now if a change is not already in the pipeline.

I look forward to being pleasantly suprised on the 27th Sept!!
